We’re heading from the 1970’s to the early 1990’s, when lesbians started to be portrayed in a better way in mainstream movies. Hollywood got it almost right, but not quite. The movies portrayed this time are: Personal Best, starring Mariel Hemingway, The Hunger (Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon and David Bowie), The Color Purple with Whoopi Goldberg, and – of course – Fried Green Tomatoes.

Lesbians at the movies from the 1940’s until the 1960’s were portrayed in a disturbing way. The fate of these characters was of course always an unhappy one and often ended in death. Any young lesbian looking for a good onscreen role model during this time had no chance at all.
